Standards Watch & Industry Intelligence
Congress has mandated that all mold remediation in U.S. military housing and facilities must follow the ANSI/IICRC S520 Standard for Professional Mold Remediation — making it the first IICRC standard written into federal law. The S520 4th Edition (published May 2024) is the current standard. Contractors performing work in military facilities must ensure their teams are trained and certified to current S520 protocols.
The S500 Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration is currently in revision. Air movement calculations are receiving the most public comment. The inspection section is being clarified to emphasize that equipment calculations must follow — not replace — proper inspection protocols. Monitor iicrc.org for public comment deadlines.
The ANSI/IICRC S520 4th Edition was published in May 2024 — replacing the 2015 edition. Updated containment protocols, documentation requirements, and risk management procedures are included. Any contractor still referencing the 2015 edition is operating under outdated guidance. Purchase and review the 4th Edition at iicrc.org.
The Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow's Workforce Act is now law. 529 education savings plans can now cover IICRC certifications, credentialing programs, and testing costs. This is a significant workforce development win for restoration contractors looking to train and retain W-2 field technicians. Encourage your team to use 529 plans to fund their IICRC courses.
Restoration & Remediation (R&R) is the industry's leading independent trade resource, reaching 15,000+ restoration professionals and 5,000+ insurance claims professionals monthly. R&R is the only publication that bridges restoration contractors directly with the insurance claims and property-loss management industries. Subscribe to stay current on technical and business developments.
Contractor Connection handles approximately 500,000 assignments annually and continues to raise digital documentation requirements. Sedgwick Repair Solutions operates in 80+ countries with 33,000 employees and is expanding its contractor network. Current TPA trends include: mandatory 3D documentation (Matterport/DocuSketch), real-time psychrometric reporting, Xactimate compliance documentation, and stricter IICRC certification requirements for preferred vendor status.
The U.S. disaster restoration services market is projected at $45.2 billion in 2026, growing at 5.3% annually through 2031. Water damage services account for approximately 41% of total demand. The U.S. recorded 27 billion-dollar disasters in 2024 generating $182.7 billion in total costs. Enterprise buyers are raising vendor qualification barriers — favoring scaled, documented, IICRC-certified firms.
